THE STORY
ABOUT
After 20 years of teaching Theatre, Media and English at the secondary level, Jason is back in school and completing his dream of a terminal degree in the arts.
The University of Georgia is where he's making it happen. The following is just a small sample of what he has done with his time here so far.
Though Jason will never achieve his mother's dream for him, being an MD, she will have to settle for his dream of a PhD, MFA & MA in Theatre. But he did play Dr. Van Helsing on stage once.
CURRICULUM VITAE
RECENT COLLABORATIONS & SOLO PROJECTS
MAKIN' RAIN (WORKSHOP AND BRAINSTORMING TEXT)
FEBRUARY 2018 - PRESENT
Though multiculturalism and diversity are often stressed in workplace and academic environments. It is usually as an addendum to the spirit of any project. The "Makin' Rain" team seeks to create a process for product refinement where diversity is baked into the process and becomes a necessary component to the success of any creative and technical work. This A2RU Grant funded project will be using the test market concept, in reverse, in order to open up the possibilities for an artist or technician to make more of their product, artifact or performance than they ever thought possible.
GRADUATE LIAISON FOR THE NEH INSTITUTE 2018: DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES IN THEATRE & PERFORMANCE STUDIES
MAY-JUNE 2018
This is a National Endowment for the Humanities funded project where some of the most innovative practitioners and influential theorists in using digital technologies for live performance have gathered to share ideas and augment projects implementing digital scholarship and performance. It is my job to coordinate the travel, living, and financial arrangements for the conference as well as tracking curriculum development and reading assignments for all 25 participants and 14 faculty members.
BOALIAN THEATRE AT COILE MIDDLE SCHOOL (COMMUNITY BASED THEATRE)
FEBRUARY 2018 - MAY 2018
As part of the Community Based Theatre class I participated as a teacher and observer of the 21st Century sponsored, after school drama program at Coile Middle School, within the Clarke County School District GA. Along with a team of 12 teachers we taught middle school students techniques from Augusto Boal's "Theatre of the Oppressed" which help students develop their own form of democratic empowerment through performance. The attached paper is an account and analysis of the time spent there.
THE ROSETTA PROJECT (A DIGITALLY INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCE PIECE)
JANUARY-NOVEMBER 2018
I belong to a six student, three faculty team at UGA, which is using cutting edge performance technologies to recreate classic performance pieces by Moliere and William Shakespeare in four different virtual environments simultaneously and coordinated in real time by live actors. I have currently been serving as location dramaturg and lip sync technician for the project. Our work will be presented at the November A2RU conference.
“UN MUNDO IDEAL” Y UN MUNDO IMPERFECTO:
A CASE STUDY OF EDUCATIONAL THEATRE
TURNING APPROPRIATION INTO ACTIVISM AND BACK AGAIN
(ACADEMIC PAPER)
DECEMBER, 2017
This is a historical account and analysis of the production of "Aladdin (Dual Language Edition)" that took place in the early 2000's at the border town Pharr, Texas. There is a fine line between honoring a culture and appropriating it for other purposes. Aladdin DLE, rides that line with provocative implications for anyone attempting to use a piece outside their given culture.
MS. OTHMER (INTERACTIVE MEDIA)
NOVEMBER 2017
Ms. Othmer is the namesake of Charlie Brown's teacher, who only speaks with trumpet sounds. I wanted to create an interactive media piece with Max/MSP/Jitter where a participant would try to operate within the environment of Charlie Brown's classroom. The "student" gets to experience what it is like when they do not know what the teacher is saying but have to rely upon cues from the classroom and the teacher's tone to meet her expectations. The project is translatable for anyone teaching students who speak different languages or have a skill set that is quite different than the coding being used in their classroom.
PB&J FROM "WE DON'T BRAKE (THE CHICAGO UBER CHRONICLES)"
DECEMBER 2018
I wrote and directed this student film based upon one of my many experiences while being an Uber driver in Chicago from March-May 2017. A book containing all of these stories is forthcoming.

FEATURED VIDEO WORK
VIDEOGRAPHER FOR "BLACK IN THE BOX"
BY MARLON BURNLEY
I worked with Jingyi Zhang on this archive of Marlon Burnley's self written and performed one man show. It was a three camera shoot that was mixed in post with Adobe Premiere. (NOTE: The featured video is currently a placeholder and is not my work, which will be posted when final edits are complete.)
